2/20/2023 0 Comments Frank hamer guns![]() It goes without saying this was not the rifle used in the ambush. This Model 81 #10045 currently resides in the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco, TX. The presence of the markings “POLICE GUN-PROPERTY OF” on the left side of the receiver proves this rifle to be a “Special Police” version built by Remington no earlier than 1940. Hamer could not have possibly used a Model 81 in the ambush (production did not begin until 1936). ![]() That was, until recently, when the fine fellows at The Great Model 8 & 81 website realized that not all the pieces fit perfectly into this bit of firearms history. You can read about the "mystery" at this link, but the gist of it all is this: For a great many years, it was widely believed by firearms historians that Texas Ranger Captain Frank Hamer used a Remington Model 8 (or 81), modified to take an extended, 15/20-round magazine, during the event which ended Bonnie & Clyde's infamous career. ![]()
